Our History

In 1993, Teddy Bear Corner’s director and owner, Dawn Tagliavia-Deri, set out with a simple goal… to create a child care program for children between the ages of six weeks through five years that modeled a home-like environment which incorporated all of the principals of Early Childhood Education, as well as followed all of the regulations set forward by the State of Connecticut and most importantly, was affordable for the families in Fairfield County seeking a full day, year-round child care program. Dawn put forward her degree in Early Childhood Education to create a special literary-based, hands-on, play based curriculum inspired by Jean Piaget’s theory of childhood development in which children learn based upon the world around them and everyday experiences.

She opened what is now our Early Learning Center on 273 Villa Avenue in 1994, which at the time housed three classrooms, after working in several child care programs in the local area and completing her degree. After six years of success, and an ever-expanding waiting list, Dawn realized the need to grow as a program. Our Infant/Toddler program on 414 Greenfield Street opened shortly afterwards in 2000 with five brand new classrooms, all separated by age and ability level. Our Early Learning Center become our main Preschool program for children between three years to five years. The opportunity to open an additional program right next door to our Infant/Toddler program became available in 2011, and it was the perfect place to start a brand-new type of program, the first of its kind in Fairfield county! Our Transitional Preschool program, which serves as a unique transitional program for children as they grow from toddlers to preschoolers, opened later that year. As of today, all three programs are consistently referred to as one of the best quality programs in Fairfield!

With over twenty-five years of successful business in Fairfield, and over five hundred graduated children, we invite you to learn more about our three programs and visit our classrooms.
